Introduction

Custom House, Kolkata, on the bank of river Hooghly is one of the oldest Custom House in the Country. It’s address is 15/1, Strand Road, Kolkata-700001. The revenue collection for Kolkata Customs(Port) depends mostly on goods imported into and exported through Kolkata Port managed by Kolkata Port Trust which include both Kolkata Dock System and Haldia Dock Complex.

Jurisdiction

The Kolkata Customs Port Commissionerate is one of the three Customs Commissionerates in Kolkata Customs Zone. The jurisdictions of Commissioner of Customs, Kolkata (Port) covers Ports of Kolkata, Haldia, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the area under the jurisdiction of Kolkata, Howrah and South Suburban Corporatins, so much of the Hoogly river as is downstream of the Northern limit of Kolkata Port and all lands as are within 10 kilometers of high water mark at spring tide on either side of the river. Apart from functioning as revenue collecting set-up under the Ministry of Finance and as regulatory wing on behalf of various Government Departments, Customs are also required to collect intelligence and conduct investigations relating to certain economic offences and smuggling. In terms of revenue collection, the Kolkata Customs (Port) formation contributes nearly 90% of the revenue collected in the Kolkata Customs Zone.
